Pilates was originally taught by Joseph Pilates using a specialist piece of equipment called a reformer; it was only later that Pilates was brought down to mat level. While the reformer might like look a modern day tool for torture, it is actually extremely beneficial to the health of your body and mind.

The reformer itself consists of a bed-like frame with a flat platform, called the carriage, which rolls back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs. These springs provide varying levels of resistance as the carriage is pushed or pulled along the frame.
